In a tragic incident on Wednesday, a minibus driver, yet to be identified, tragically lost his life in an accident on the Olaiya overhead bridge in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.
The accident, which occurred around 1:40 pm, involved two vehicles: a mini intercity bus bearing registration number FNN836XA and a Toyota Camry car with plate number LND546FC.
Of the five individuals involved, one male and four females, three were rescued and promptly transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
An eyewitness, Mrs. Funmi Adeyemo, recounted that the accident unfolded when the intercity bus driver suddenly collapsed while behind the wheel. Consequently, the bus swerved off the road, colliding with a vehicle parked by the roadside. Tragically, the driver succumbed to the impact, while some passengers sustained severe injuries in the harrowing ordeal.
“One of the passengers attempted to take control of the bus before it collided with a Toyota Camry car parked on the roadside,” she said.
“I saw people shouting as the vehicle lost control, but a female passenger managed to steer the vehicle down the bridge before it collided with a vehicle parked on the highway. ”
Upon reaching out to Mr. Henry Benamaisia, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Osun State, he confirmed the occurrence of the accident.
Benamaisia specified that the accident transpired in the afternoon, emphasizing the prompt response from FRSC personnel which averted heavy traffic congestion on the road.
The FRSC official disclosed that the injured passengers received immediate medical attention at the hospital, while the deceased driver’s body was transported to the morgue.
He urged all road users to prioritize safety while driving and emphasized the importance of abstaining from the consumption of hard drugs, alcohol, or any other harmful substances while operating a vehicle.
