The Super Eagles of Nigeria have clinched a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final for the first time since their victory in 2013, prevailing 4-2 on penalties in an electrifying semi-final clash with South Africa.
Entering the match with four consecutive ‘clean sheet’ wins, Nigeria approached the encounter in Bouaké with confidence, aiming for their eighth final appearance. South Africa, competing in their first AFCON semi-final in 24 years, posed a formidable challenge, resulting in a tense start with neither team seizing control.
South Africa had an early chance to take the lead through Percy Tau, but his attempt was stopped by Stanley Nwabili. As halftime loomed, South Africa remained threatening, with Nwabili thwarting Evidence Makgopa’s shot.
After halftime, Nigeria regained focus, and Victor Osimhen earned a penalty, converted by Troost-Ekong, granting Nigeria a crucial lead. South Africa pressed for an equalizer, and Makgopa came close, narrowly missing the target.
Osimhen’s apparent second goal for Nigeria was disallowed due to a foul spotted by VAR, providing South Africa with a lifeline. Teboho Mokoena converted a late penalty, leveling the score.
In the dying moments of stoppage time, Khuliso Mudau missed a chance to secure victory for South Africa. In extra time, Nigeria couldn’t capitalize on a numerical advantage after Grant Kekana’s red card for fouling Terem Moffi.
South Africa faltered in the penalty shootout, missing two crucial kicks, while Kelechi Iheanacho sealed Nigeria’s win, propelling them into Sunday’s final against either Ivory Coast or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
