In a distressing turn of events, Rashidat Shittu, a 400-level student at Kwara State University, Malete, located in the Moro Local Government Area of the state, has reportedly taken her own life, allegedly due to academic pressure.
According to a fellow student who spoke anonymously to our correspondent, Shittu ended her life in anticipation of upcoming exams by ingesting insecticide. Despite immediate efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
Reports indicate that Shittu was initially taken to the school clinic before being urgently transferred to the teaching hospital in a bid to save her life. However, despite the best efforts of medical personnel at UITH, she was declared deceased upon arrival.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the university community and serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of mental health support and resources for students facing academic challenges.
“Her colleagues said she was having issues with her academic status in school. She later informed her colleagues when she started feeling the pain that she had ingested insecticide,” she said.
A resident who witnessed her Janazah at the Muslim cemetery, Osere, Ilorin, told our correspondent that the deceased was buried at the facility by family members and employees of the students affairs unit of KWASU.
When contacted, KWASU’s Director of University Relations, Dr Saeedat Aliyu, in a text message, said that she was not aware of the death of the student.
“I am not yet aware of the information on the death of any of our students. But I will find out and get back to you as soon as those who should give the information confirmit,” Aliyu said.
