The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kano State branch, has announced the immediate suspension of services at the Emergency Paediatric Unit of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
This decision comes after the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum given to Governor Abba Yusuf to remove the State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Amina Abdullahi HOD, over allegations of assault against a female doctor at the hospital.
Dr. Muhammad Musa, the Public Relations Officer for NMA Kano, confirmed the cessation of services on Wednesday.
He emphasized that the action was taken due to the state government’s failure to address the issue adequately.
“An investigation by the Ministry of Health confirmed that the doctor was not at fault in the incident, affirming that she acted with full professionalism in her duties.
“Despite this, no action has been taken to address the misconduct of the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, who led the assault and harassed a healthcare worker carrying out her duties under extremely challenging conditions.
“NMA Kano has therefore resolved to withdraw all medical services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital indefinitely, effective from noon today, 6th November 2024.”
He said the action would not be reversed until the government dismisses the commissioner, provides adequate staffing and resources, and improves security measures.
